When school is out, children have more time for enjoying breakfast. Try some of these ideas for simple breakfast dishes anyone can prepare with common ingredients.

Cold cereal is an easy breakfast, yet it can be boring after a while. The purpose of eating breakfast is to fortify yourself with something filling and nutritious for the day ahead. Whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, fruit juice, and dairy products are some of the favorite breakfast items. There may be fruits, grains, and dairy products you have not considered for breakfast.

Beverages

Smoothies are a popular drink for breakfast. You can fashion a smoothie with any fruits or even vegetables, if you know how to use a blender. Wash fresh fruits like strawberries, bananas or blueberries. Add milk, a few cubes of ice, or a scope of ice cream. Honey, yogurt, fruit juice, or any type of flavorful food you enjoy. Blend until thick and cold. Be creative and invent a smoothie that suits your taste buds.

Juice blends are made by combining several fruit juices and pouring the juice into a glass of crushed ice or over a scope of vanilla ice cream.

Hot chocolate can be served as an iced drink. Prepare cocoa with milk or water and pour over ice. Top with a swirl of whipped cream.

Whole Grains

Get your whole grains from cold cereal, hot oatmeal, or other hot cereals like cream of wheat or rice. Top with sliced strawberries, bananas, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, or try pineapple, mandarin oranges, shredded coconut, raisins, grapes, chopped nuts, star fruit, or grapefruit.

Toasts give you the grain you need. If you choose a whole wheat or oat bread, seven-grain or other wheat bread your toast will be more nutritious.

Cheese toast is simple. First lay slices of cheese on your whole wheat bread and toast until the top bubbles in a toaster oven.

To make cinnamon toast, butter slices of bread and sprinkle on a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon before you place in a toaster oven. When the butter and sugar bubble and begin to brown the toast is done. To make cinnamon toast with a pop-up toaster, toast the dry bread and while it is still warm, butter it and sprinkle on sugar and cinnamon.

Spread peanut butter on warm toast for a high protein food. Top with banana slices or honey. Add jelly or raisins for variety. Try tahini butter (sesame seed butter) or soy butter.

Fresh Fruits

Try oranges, tangerines, tangelos, grapefruits or mandarin oranges with yogurt. Fresh pineapple, sliced apples, bananas, or pomegranates are tasty alone or mixed with yogurt.

Berries, bananas, peaches, and nectarines are good with cream, milk, or whipped cream on top. Try combining fruits like cranberries or strawberries with softened cream cheese, crushed drained pineapple, pecans, then freezing in paper cups for a frosty breakfast treat to eat with a spoon.

Fruit juices like orange juice or apple juice served over ice make a refreshing drink. Try partially freezing the juice in a plastic drinking glass and then stirring for a slushy. Although juices have fiber and vitamins, they also have a high portion of natural and added sugars. So watch the amount you drink.

Fruit with yogurt or on cold or hot cereal is sweet and healthy.

Dairy Products

Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, sliced cheese, and string cheese can add to a healthy breakfast. Combined with cereals, served with fruits, in smoothies, or on toast these milk products give calcium and protein to your breakfast.

Yogurt served in a bowl with fruit, raisins, nuts, sliced apple and a drizzle of honey makes a fine breakfast. Use your imagination to come up with some great breakfasts. Toast, fruits, juices, and whole grain cereals and breads complete a good breakfast, giving you the energy to make it through a long fun-filled summer morning.
